Chapter 24

Even though I didn’t think it was possible, I did fall asleep again in the hay. I woke up feeling surprisingly good, considering I had no bed. The sun was streaming through the small window, splashing its warmth on the ground in a small square shape.

I stretched out to my full height, which was sadly unimpressive. I raised my knee to my chest cautiously, but except for a little stiffness it felt fine. I sat up and rubbed the back of my neck. I should have stolen the pillow from the hotel room.

I looked over at Rueben, expecting him to still be sleeping since he hadn’t said anything yet but he was gone. He wasn’t anywhere in the barn. Exhaling loudly, I rose up to my knees and pulled my hair up in a quick knot at the back of my head.

He probably didn’t leave me here, I told myself as I hurried over to the barn door. I’m going to find him right outside, doing something stupid. It’s fine, everything was fine.

It didn’t matter how many times I told myself that though, my hands were still shaking when I pulled on the door. I couldn’t believe how heavy it was. The man who had brought us here was old and scrawny looking and it didn’t seem heavy to him.

It had to just be because my hands were shaking so badly, I wasn’t weak. I took the oversized handle with both hands and tugged for all I was worth, almost sending myself to the ground when it gave way too abruptly.

“Whoa,” I mumbled awkwardly. I really hoped that no one saw me do that.

Of course I didn’t have that kind of luck, though. A crowd had formed by the barn door, all staring at me with narrowed eyes. “Umm … hello.” I waved awkwardly.

A little girl, who couldn’t have been more than eight, stepped forward to speak for the group. “Your father put this lock on the door, so you wouldn’t wander off.” She held up a large pad lock that had been broken off.

“He’s not my father.”

“You broke the lock. Right off the door.” Her eyes were wide when they looked back up at me.

So, that’s why it had been so hard to open. Why was Rueben locking me in the barn anyway? I could feel my forehead tightening with my scowl. So I didn’t wander off. What did he think, that I was his puppy dog? I had seen myself as Ryan’s dog, too. Is that all I was becoming? A vampet?

No way!

“Are you an SH?” the little girl asked.

“No.” I looked guiltily at the lock still in her hands. “The lock must have been weak. Just hit it in the right place.” I licked my dry lips. “I know, it was a burst of adrenaline because I was so scared.”

I closed my mouth on any more words. She was eight, she didn’t know anything about adrenaline. Or SH species for that matter. She just wanted to know how I broke that lock.
